Advice on integrating gender dimensions into teaching, research and degree programs
We advise all academics at the three cooperating universities on applications, policies or projects in order to integrate gender dimensions.
Gender consulting in research and teaching
Together, we systematically examine specific projects to determine whether and how gender is or can be significant in terms of content and methodology. This can be discussed during a consultation with Juliette Wedl. We also provide support in assessing the relevance of gender in research proposals, which is required by funding bodies such as the DFG and the EU. Juliette Wedl explains what this means in the TU Magazine interview.
The relevance of gender in terms of content and methodology varies depending on the scientific context and topic, so that the gender dimensions, i.e. the consideration of gender, must be determined specifically in each case. The aim is to align scientific work in research and teaching “with the needs of all people and to take into account that research results can have different consequences for the different genders“(BMBF call for proposals “Geschlechteraspekte im Blick”). Following on from this, other diversity dimensions can also be taken into account.
The question of the relevance of gender dimensions differs from the equality-oriented question of who researches or teaches; for the difference, see here. Such Equality & Diversity Consulting is offered by the equality offices of the respective universities(TU, Ostfalia, HBK).
In-depth information on research and teaching
For (STEM) research Relevance assessment tools were gathered as part of the BMBF project “Gender dimensions at a glance (IH2E)”; here you will find corresponding checklists and materials that are suitable for independent assessment.
For teaching, the online toolbox Gender and Diversity in Teaching at Freie Universität Berlin offers introductory information, practical tips and application examples. The online handout Gender and Diversity in the Teaching of STEM Subjects from the Women’s Research Centre of the Hessian Universities (gFFZ) offers interdisciplinary as well as subject-specific tools for engineering, computer science and mathematics.
Gender dimensions in degree programmes
Particularly in STEM degree programmes, but also in the liberal arts, there has historically been a gender imbalance among students. We advise on issues relating to gender-sensitive presentation and ways to make degree programmes more attractive for all genders.
In-depth informationen on degree programmes
Suggestions for integrating gender studies content into the curricula of degree programmes can be found here on the website of the Network for Women’s and Gender Studies NRW. The database contains suggestions for curricula for (almost) all degree programmes that can be studied in Germany. You will also find a list of experts for the assessment of study programmes taking gender dimensions into account. Gender experts from Lower Saxony can be found here in the list of LAGEN (Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft der Einrichtungen für Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung in Niedersachsen).
The MINT 4 TU website offers further information and tips in this regard; it was created by the Equal Opportunities Office at TU Braunschweig in cooperation with the Braunschweig Centre for Gender Studies.
Networking
We also support networking with other scientists and research projects.
